A New Era in Indonesia’s Skies: NC212i NavTrain Poised to Train the Next Generation of Air Force Navigators

Bandung once again becomes a quiet stage for Indonesia’s aerospace industry.

Without fanfare, PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) has released yet another technological achievement—the NC212i in its Navigation Training (NavTrain) configuration.

A Cockpit Transformed into an Airborne Classroom

Unlike transport or mission-configured aircraft, the NC212i NavTrain is essentially a flying classroom. Inside, it houses navigation tables, instrument panels, instructor and trainee seats, as well as complete communication equipment for mission simulation.

Aspiring navigators can now train directly in the air—not only from cold, static ground simulators.

The arrival of this NavTrain unit is more than just a fleet update; it is a renewal of the training systems that support the operational readiness of the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU).

“After six units were previously delivered, today we are dispatching the seventh… The NC212i is a reliable multirole aircraft suited for various missions, including Navigation Training,” said Dena Hendriana, PTDI’s Director of Production, on Thursday (Dec 4, 2025).

Behind the Flight Deck: A Calm Rhythm and Tight Safety Protocols

The aircraft, tail number AX-2134, was flown by Major Pnb Kurniawan S. and Captain Pnb Wahyu Nur Syarifudin—two pilots familiar with ferry-flight missions. The day before, the aircraft had passed IDAA Acceptance, one of the strictest defense inspection gateways.

This unit completes seven out of nine NC212i aircraft contracted by the Ministry of Defense (Kemhan RI). The eighth unit is scheduled to take flight in the first quarter of 2026—signaling PTDI’s ambitious target to show that Indonesia’s aerospace industry is not merely surviving, but advancing.

Replacing the 1985 Fleet: A New Generation Arrives

The TNI AU welcomes this delivery with enthusiasm. “This Navigation Training aircraft will replace our aging NavTrain fleet, which has been in service since 1985,” said Deputy Commander of Wing 1, Colonel Pnb Wisnu Aji Prabowo.

After nearly four decades relying on old platforms, the arrival of the NC212i NavTrain is like swapping a dull pencil for a digital pen. The Air Force needs this—especially with increasingly complex operational environments, from combat and patrol missions to humanitarian operations like the recent mission in Medan.

With its smoother MTV-27 propellers, lower noise levels, and optimal compatibility with Honeywell TPE331 engines, training becomes more comfortable and precise.

More Than a Delivery: This Is About the Future

The NC212i may be a small aircraft, but its impact is significant. Every ferry flight represents more than handing over an airframe; it reflects the strengthening of Indonesia’s defense ecosystem—from technology and human resources to industrial independence.

Bandung to Malang is just one route. But for PTDI and the Indonesian Air Force, it symbolizes a much longer journey toward true aerospace sovereignty.
