Piala Dirgantara 2026 Strengthens Sportsmanship and Collaboration as PTDI Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary

BANDUNG – In celebration of its 50th anniversary, PT Dirgantara Indonesia (Persero) (PTDI) is once again hosting Piala Dirgantara 2026, a series of sporting events featuring competitions across multiple disciplines. This year’s program includes badminton, mini soccer, basketball, billiards, padel, E-Sport, and Rapid Chess, bringing together PTDI employees, sports communities, and members of the public.

Carrying PTDI’s 50th anniversary theme, “Golden Legacy, Global Horizon: Menjaga Kedaulatan Bangsa, Mengangkasa di Panggung Dunia,” Piala Dirgantara 2026 serves as a platform to strengthen collaboration between the industrial sector, sports communities, and the wider public. Through a range of sporting disciplines, the program brings together education, culture, sportsmanship, and a spirit of togetherness.

The Piala Dirgantara 2026 series began with a badminton tournament held from July 27 to August 19, 2026, at the B.J. Habibie Auditorium, PKSN. This was followed by a mini soccer tournament taking place from August 1 to 22, 2026, at Bintang Sport Mini Soccer in Cimahi. The series continues with various other sporting competitions, including a Rapid Chess tournament that brings together chess players from different regions across Indonesia. The entire series will culminate in PTDI’s 50th anniversary celebration on August 29, 2026, through the Runtainment event.

One of the featured events is the PTDI Rapid Chess Tournament, held on August 15, 2026, at the concourse of the B.J. Habibie Auditorium Building at PTDI. The event was attended by Asep Mulyana, Chairman of the West Java Provincial Executive Board of the Indonesian Chess Federation (PERCASI); Nuryadi, Chairman of the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) Bandung; and Salahuddin Al Ayubi, Chairman of the Bandung City Executive Board of PERCASI.

Held in collaboration with PERCASI, the tournament is a national-level Rapid Chess competition involving 500 participants representing 11 provinces across Indonesia.

The PTDI Rapid Chess Tournament has been held for three consecutive years since 2024, reflecting the growing enthusiasm within the chess community. This year’s competition also features Indonesian Grandmaster Novendra Priasmoro and Vietnamese Grandmaster Nguyen Duc Hoa. Their participation further strengthens the quality of the competition while providing participants with valuable competitive experience.

PTDI Rapid Chess 2026 features several categories, including Master, Non-Master, Veteran, and Junior divisions covering participants from elementary and junior high school levels. The range of categories allows participants across different age groups and levels of ability to compete in a national-level chess tournament.

Chess was selected as one of the sporting disciplines in Piala Dirgantara 2026 because its core values closely reflect the characteristics required in the aerospace industry, including strategy, accuracy, concentration, precision, situational awareness, and sound decision-making. These qualities are also essential to aerospace activities, where every process requires careful planning and thorough calculation.

The tournament adopts the Rapid Chess format, in which each player has more than 10 minutes but less than 60 minutes to complete a game, in accordance with the regulations of the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE). At PTDI Rapid Chess 2026, each player is given 10 minutes, with an additional three seconds added for every move.

The format is shorter than classical chess while providing more playing time than blitz chess. Players are therefore required to manage their time effectively while developing strategies quickly and accurately. Standard chess rules remain in effect, including castling, en passant, and pawn promotion.

Players must complete their games before their allotted time expires, making speed of thought, accuracy, decision-making, and time management important factors in determining success on the board.

“In chess, players are not only required to move quickly, but must also think ahead, read the situation, assess risks, develop strategies, and make the right decisions. We apply the same principles in the aerospace industry. When building an aircraft, there is no room for arbitrary decisions. Every process requires careful planning, accuracy, precision, and thorough calculation.

Through chess, we want to convey a simple message: to move forward, we must think strategically, work with precision, and have the courage to make decisions,” said Gita Amperiawan, President Director of PTDI.

Through Piala Dirgantara 2026, PTDI marks five decades of its journey by strengthening a spirit of togetherness, sportsmanship, and collaboration with its employees, sports communities, and the public. This spirit represents part of the Golden Legacy built over five decades while reinforcing PTDI’s path toward a Global Horizon and an increasingly broader role in the future.
