PTDI Celebrates 50th Anniversary with Rapid Chess Tournament at Dirgantara Cup 2026
DESKJABAR - As part of its 50th anniversary celebration, PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI Persero) is once again holding a series of sporting events as part of the 2026 Dirgantara Cup. Rapid chess is one of the sporting disciplines featured in this year's event.
The PTDI Rapid Chess Tournament is being held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at the foyer of the B.J. Habibie Auditorium Building at PTDI. The event is also attended by Asep Mulyana, Chairman of the West Java Provincial Board of the Indonesian Chess Association (PERCASI); Nuryadi, Chairman of the Bandung City National Sports Committee (KONI); and Salahuddin Al Ayubi, Chairman of the Bandung City Board of PERCASI. Held in collaboration with PERCASI, the tournament is a national-level rapid chess competition featuring 500 participants representing 11 provinces across Indonesia.
The PTDI Rapid Chess Tournament has been held for three consecutive years since 2024, reflecting the growing enthusiasm of the chess community. The participation of Indonesian Grandmaster Novendra Priasmoro and Vietnamese Grandmaster Nguyen Duc Hoa further strengthens the quality of the competition while giving participants valuable competitive experience.
Competition Categories
The PTDI Rapid Chess 2026 competition features several categories, including Master, Non-Master, Veteran, and Junior divisions for elementary and junior high school students. The range of categories gives participants from different age groups and skill levels the opportunity to compete in a national-level chess tournament.
Chess was selected as one of the sporting disciplines in the 2026 Dirgantara Cup because many of its core values reflect the characteristics of the aerospace industry, including strategy, accuracy, concentration, precision, situational awareness, and sound decision-making. These qualities are also essential in aerospace operations, where careful planning and thorough calculation are required at every stage.
Under the Rapid Chess format, each player has more than 10 minutes and less than 60 minutes to complete a game, in accordance with the regulations of the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE). At the PTDI Rapid Chess 2026, the time control is set at 10 minutes, with an additional three seconds added for every move.
Format
The format is shorter than classical chess but longer than blitz, requiring players to manage their time while developing strategies quickly and accurately. Players continue to follow standard chess rules, including castling, en passant, and pawn promotion.
Each player must complete the game before the allotted time runs out. As a result, speed of thought, accuracy, decision-making, and time management are all critical factors in winning a game.
“In chess, players are not only required to move quickly, but also to think ahead, assess the situation, weigh risks, develop strategies, and make the right decisions. We apply the same principles in the aerospace industry. When building an aircraft, there is no room for careless decisions. Every process requires careful planning, accuracy, precision, and thorough calculation. Through chess, we want to deliver a simple message: to move forward, we must think strategically, work with precision, and have the courage to make decisions,” said Gita Amperiawan, President Director of PTDI.
Through the 2026 Dirgantara Cup, PTDI is marking 50 years of its journey by strengthening the spirit of togetherness, sportsmanship, and collaboration among PTDI employees, sports communities, and the wider public. This spirit is part of the Golden Legacy built over five decades, while reinforcing PTDI's path toward a Global Horizon and an increasingly broader role in the future.
